Strengthen the Underground

After carefully analyzing the state of the Heavy Music Underground scene, we decided to share some of the research we have gathered. First of all, we believe that there is a lot of potential today, thanks to the hunger behind the bands that have proven to possess all the necessary passion and talent to keep the Heavy Music flame fired up for years to come. So if you are a promoter, a musician, a fan, or have dared to question the state of the Heavy Music Underground Scene, read carefully and take note.

- While there are a significant amount of bands in today's scene, there are very few that are properly managing their careers. Ever wonder what made the bands in the 80's become music "super powers"? An important element of their success is the way they managed their careers, which for many meant dedicating their lives 100% to the bands they were in and most importantly, making sure everyone who came to their shows went home and remembered their music. This needs to be applied today more than ever, because with so many bands around, it’s easy for bands to get lost in the flood of music that is present today.

- We've also noticed that many bands are booking shows back to back, without realizing that this hurts not only their draw, but also the promoters. And if a band has a low draw, this will make it harder for bands to get booked at bigger shows. In our experience, a promoter books a band solely on their overall draw within a period of time. Why do you think national acts spread their tour-dates and avoid playing the same region twice in a short period of time?

- Additionally, we've noticed that some bands are uselessly competitive towards other bands. What bands need to realize is that the more united the bands within the scene are, the stronger the scene will be. The growth of the scene as a unit will benefit all bands involved. The bands and the fans need to understand that it makes no sense to be part of a show without supporting all the bands involved. We often see people go to a show just for a particular bands set, then pack-up and leave. Also, if bands want to sell merchandise, they need to connect with fans on and off stage.

- We have also come across with bands that charge a certain amount to play, but draw very low amounts of people. Word of advice, all promoters and bands talk to each other before booking a band. If you are going to charge to play, you should make sure that you draw a significant amount of people (30+), in order to justify your cost to the promoters.

- Finally, media outlets need to pay more attention to the up and coming bands; since this is were the future of Heavy Music lives. It seems that there is a very big gap between the national acts and the local acts. The only way this gap will be minimized is by making the Heavy Music Underground scene stronger.

Here are some bands that are making a difference in the Heavy Music underground scene:

The World We Knew: Version 2010

This past Sunday we experienced another furious show put together by 2 Legit Bookings. 2 Legit Booking is a New York City based booking company, started by John Effin Wiley (Severed & The World We Knew) and his partner in crime Dee. 2 Legit has quickly become a reputable and honest booking company, which is why Horns Up Rocks has jumped on board with 2 Legit, and together have helped to give rebirth to the New York City Heavy Music underground scene. Ok, enough props. We are here to tell you about the brutal assault known as The World We Knew.

The World We Knew came to surface in 2004 when singer Frank Fanelli decided it was time to stop compromising his talent, and to start playing some brutal music. After many years of hard work, in 2007 they released their debut album titled "Exortium". A few years later and after a few lineup changes, they released "To The Wolves". This is the album that caught the attention of Stillborn Records, the label owned and operated by Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed. Once Stillborn Records took them under their wing, it was time for the band to get busy on the road. After they got signed by Stillborn Records, one of the big tours they were part of was Stillborn Fest 2009. From there on, things got pretty hectic for the band and once their touring cycle ended, it was time for some restructuring.

After a few months of trial and error, singer Frank Fanelli and guitarist Tim Howley, found the links they were missing in order to re-create their chain of punishing brutality. In a very wise move, the band brought in Severed's backbone: guitarist Justin Whang, bassist John Effin Wiley, and drummer Jorge Sosa. Judging from their performance this past Sunday at Club Europa, the band's upcoming tour in December, which will conclude with another run with Stillborn Fest (featuring Hatebreed), will be a vulgar display of power! Don't believe us? Check out this exclusive video which includes live footage of The World We knew, and an interview with singer Frank Fanelli! \m/

Christopher James Adler # 38

Today is Chris Adler's 38th birthday. Who is Chris Adler? None other then the machine of beats behind one of the best Heavy Metal bands in the last 10 years: Lamb Of God, from Richmond Virginia. Not only is Chris the drummer of this global Heavy Metal entity, but he is also the man keeping Lamb Of God in line when it comes to business. Here are some other interesting facts about Chris Adler.

- Chris went to Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Virginia.

- After graduation, he attended college at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. This is where he met current band mates John Campbell and Mark Morton.

- Chris's baby brother is Lamb Of God guitarist Willie Adler. Together they are known as the "Metal Purists" in the band.

- Before devoting his life and career to Lamb Of God, Chris was planning a career as a Network Engineer. He is Microsoft certified.

- He admits that even today he gets nervous before big shows. "I have to watch the video when we are done because I kinda black out and just run on adrenaline and muscle memory."

- His favorite song to play live is Hourglass.

- According to an interview he did for DRUM! Magazine, Chris describes his first drum kit as a total disaster:

"The bass drum legs were different lengths so they wouldn’t touch the ground at the same time. Every time I would hit it, it would wobble from left to right. The cymbal stands were duct taped together, and I think after two or three times playing the kit, the pedal-board actually broke in half because it was made of that crappy old fake metal."

Happy birthday to Chris Adler, we wish him many more years of health, drum bashing, and WORLD DOMINATION with Lamb of f'ing GOD! \m/

Here are some videos of Chris proving why he is one of the best drummers today!
