Heavy Music History Is Made On National Metal Day Thanks To Black Sabbath!

After much speculation, the original four members of BLACK SABBATH – OZZY OSBOURNE (vocals), TONY IOMMI (guitar), GEEZER BUTLER (bass) and BILL WARD (drums) – have reunited to record their first new studio album in 33 years with producer Rick Rubin (seven-time Grammy winner, two of those as Producer of the Year) and to embark on a massive world tour in 2012.

OSBOURNE, IOMMI, BUTLER and WARD as well as Rubin all gathered today on 11/11/11 to announce the news at a Los Angeles press conference at the legendary club, the Whisky A Go-Go, the site of the groundbreaking and influential band’s first L.A. concert exactly 41 years ago (Nov 11, 1970). The event was hosted by the revered musical and spoken word artist Henry Rollins who has said that “Any band worth their weight in napalm wishes they had written ‘War Pigs.’”

Selling over 70 million albums together, the Grammy-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees have signed a new record deal worldwide with Vertigo and Vertigo/ Universal Republic in the U.S., the band’s original label. BLACK SABBATH is now in the studio recording the as-yet-untitled new album for release in the fall of 2012 (exact date TBA). It will mark their ninth studio album together and their first since 1978’s Never Say Die!

Next summer, BLACK SABBATH will headline the mammoth multi-day UK Download Festival in the U.K. on June 10. The new album will then be supported with a worldwide headline arena tour (dates TBA).

BLACK SABBATH also announced today the launch of www.blacksabbath.com, the first-ever official BLACK SABBATH website for all authorized BLACK SABBATH news. In addition, the band’s online presence will also be supported by social media via Facebook and Twitter–again, marking the band’s first-ever foray into the social media world.

BLACK SABBATH released their self-titled debut album in 1970. “Black Sabbath is credited with creating heavy metal,” according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “The success of their first two albums–Black Sabbath and Paranoid–marked a paradigm shift in the world of rock. Not until Black Sabbath upended the music scene did the term ‘heavy metal’ enter the popular vocabulary to describe the denser, more thunderous offshoot of rock over which they presided.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also noted, “…they remain one of the most misunderstood bands in rock history,” adding: “The band’s musicality was generally overlooked, but they possessed an inventiveness and fluency that, in hindsight, makes them seem as much of a progressive-rock band as a heavy-metal one.”

In 1998, BLACK SABBATH released Reunion from their 1997 concerts in Birmingham, England, a two-CD live set that featured two new studio songs. The band has also sporadically reunited for shows in 1999, 2002 and 2004; in 2005, the four performed concerts together when they toured Europe and then headlined the 10th anniversary of Osbourne’s namesake festival OZZfest. Also in 2005, they were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame by Brian May of Queen. This was followed by their induction in 2006 into the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an honor bestowed on them by Metallica’s James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.

Former Anthrax Singer Dan Nelson Files Lawsuit Against Anthrax!

The story behind the departure of Dan Nelson from Anthrax, is one of the biggest mysteries within Heavy Music in the last few years. The band claims that in 2009 Nelson "abruptly resigned" Anthrax, after getting sick and forcing a cancellation of a tour. Nelson claims that Anthrax fired him out of the blue, while the band was in the final stages of production of their latest album "Worship Music".

Recently, Anthrax's drummer Charlie Benante said during an interview that Nelson was "bullying" the band. This added the last piece of coal to Nelson's fire, and now he is suing Anthrax for 2.65 million dollars for "intentional defamation" that has caused him a loss of income and has damaged his reputation within the scene. Additionally, the Manhattan federal court charges that Nelson didn't receive his fair share of profits for the songs he wrote for Anthrax's latest album "Worship Music".

Axl Rose Interview Premieres Tonight On VH1 Classic's 'That Metal Show'!

In order to kickoff season 9 with a big bang, the "That Metal Show crew headed down to Miami, Florida to conduct an exclusive interview with GUNS N' ROSES lead singer Axl Rose and lead guitarist DJ Ashba. During his first TV interview in over a decade, Axl talks about his new band-mates, life on the road, rumors, misconceptions and more. The premiere episode of "That Metal Show" with Axl Rose airs tonight (Friday, November 11th) at 11 PM ET/PT on VH1 Classic.

Recently, the NY Daily News conducted an interview with Eddie Trunk regarding the historical interview that he and his co-hosts Don Jamieson and Jim Florentine conducted for VH1 Classic's "That Metal Show", this is what went down.

“He talks about a lot of reasons why he’s late,” says Trunk. “Then at the very end he kind of laughs and admits that when he was a kid and had a job right next door, he never got there on time, either.”

This interview itself reinforced that point. Trunk arrived at 2 p.m. at the venue where Guns ‘N Roses was playing a concert and finally scored the interview at 5:30 the next morning.

“You quickly realize that with this band, everything runs on Axl time,” says Trunk, adding that he was “ecstatic” to talk to Rose at all, no matter what the hour.

“I suppose ideally I would have talked to him at a time when I hadn’t been hanging around for 15 hours and up for 24 straight hours. But I’m not complaining.”

Trunk says he was told to come to the venue, set up his crew and that if it felt right to Axl, he’d do the interview.

“So we spent a lot of that time talking to everyone else,” says Trunk. “We talked to the crew, everyone in the band. I mean, we had to get a show out of it whether we talked to Axl or not. So now we’ve got a lot of good stuff that won’t make it on the air this time.”

What helped, Trunk allows, is that he was the guy to whom Rose gave his last interview – five years ago, on Trunk’s radio show.

“That one was completely out of the blue,” says Trunk. “Sebastian Bach was there, and he knows Axl. So they were texting and Bach said, hey, c’mon down – and he did.

“After the show ended, he hung out for a couple of hours. He was just a cool guy who likes to talk about music.”

Trunk has become the go-to media guy in the metal and hard rock media world, and he says the reason is nothing complicated.

“I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” he says. “And I think it’s clear to everyone that first and foremost I’m a fan. I’m not going to try to make anyone look bad.

“That said, however, I will ask the tough questions. I want to know what the fans want to know. I’ve turned down interviews when I was told the artist wouldn’t talk about something I knew I had to ask.”

In the case of Rose, he says, the only precondition was that he not ask about a reunion of the original Guns ‘N Roses. “Which I understand,” says Trunk. “He’s on the road now with new guys, and he loves playing with them. And he actually brought up some of the original guys himself at a couple of points.”

Trunk says they talk about the new band, Rose’s long interludes between CDs, and his feeling about his “Chinese Democracy” CD.

They also talk about the Rock Hall, to which Guns ‘N Roses has been nominated in its first year of eligibility.

“He says it’s not something he thinks a lot about,” says Trunk. “He thinks it’s mostly for fans. But he said it’s an honor and he talks about how he inducted Elton John, whom he loves. If it’s good enough for Elton, he said, it’s good enough for him.”

Friday night’s “That Metal Show” kicks off a round of eight new episodes, one of which by coincidence will feature Slash, the original Guns ‘N Roses guitarist.

Meantime, having interviewed Rose has kept Trunk busy.

“Magazines that can’t interview Axl are talking to me about interviewing him,” he says. “I’ve talked to Rolling Stone, Spin and a bunch of others.

“The anticipation for this interview is really something – from all over the world.”

11-11-11 = National Metal Day!

Today is 11-11-11, a day that has been dubbed as "National Metal Day" by VH1 Classic. In order to celebrate OUR holiday, VH1 classic is featuring a slew of exclusive Metal programming, including three major Metal premieres: "Behind The Music Remastered" at 9PM ET/PT, the exclusive debut of Banger Films groundbreaking documentary series, "Metal Evolution" at 10PM ET/PT and the ninth season premiere of a VH1 Classic original "That Metal Show" at 11PM ET/PT.

"Behind The Music Remastered: Megadeth" premieres Friday, November 11 at 9PM ET/PT.
They've been the champions of Thrash Metal for nearly thirty years, despite discord, addiction and infighting. Updated to the original episode are Dave Mustaine's crippling hand injury which threatens the bands survival, a painful law suit and more walk outs and throw outs of band members. Now they're in the 'Big Four' and still aiming for the top spot, but even if Dave Mustaine is happy with the new line up he remains unhappy about their ranking in the top ten of Heavy Metal – still just behind Metallica.

"Metal Evolution Chapter 1: Pre-Metal" premieres Friday, November 11 at 10 PM ET/PT.
The premiere episode of "Metal Evolution Chapter 1: Pre-Metal" will focus on Pre-Metal, the earliest sounds of Metal that can be heard in the music of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix. Subsequent episodes of the series will explore genres ranging from British Heavy Metal to Glam Metal to Thrash Metal, and artists from Iron Maiden to KISS to Metallica and more. "Metal Evolution" is an 11-episode docu-series produced by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn of Banger Films and is based on the groundbreaking "Heavy Metal Family Tree." The "Heavy Metal Family Tree" is a 26 sub-genre genealogical chart which reveals the vast complex progeny of Heavy Metal – from Early Metal and Shock Rock to Thrash, from Progressive Metal to Grunge and Nu Metal. Using the chart as his road map, host/producer and Metalhead turned anthropologist Dunn, crisscrosses the globe exploring the vast history of Heavy Metal across its 40+ year history and beyond. After the premiere episode on National Metal Day, "Metal Evolution" will move to its regular time slot on Saturdays at 10 PM ET/PT, beginning Saturday, November 19 between new episodes of "Behind The Music: Remastered" at 9PM ET/PT and That Metal Show at 11PM ET/PT.

"That Metal Show" Season nine premieres Friday, November 11 at 11PM ET/PT. The boys are back and there's gonna be some trouble! Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson and Jim Florentine are back in LA and bringing the heat with season nine of That Metal Show. An all-star lineup of iconic metal guests grace the stage this season including: Axl Rose, Marilyn Manson, Slash, Sully Erna, Jesse James Dupree, Tracii Guns, Brian Johnson, Dave Mustaine and more! Chimaira's Guitarists Quit The Band - Official Statement From Vocalist Mark Hunter!

Vocalist Mark Hunter of Cleveland, Ohio metallers CHIMAIRA has released the following statement:

"I would like to start off by thanking our fans for a great tour. This last run was a blast, and truly the most fun we’ve had in a long while. The energy from the audience was exactly what we needed, and a welcoming return. Thank you, guys!

"Unfortunately, as much fun as we were having, behind the scenes we were aware of some unfortunate realities that prevented us from 'living the dream' and having the time of our lives. We had another bomb to drop on the fans.

"Early in July, we were informed that Rob Arnold [guitar] and Matt DeVries [guitar] would be leaving CHIMAIRA at the end of 2011. Of course, this was a huge blow, but there were no hard feelings. We understand that life invades art, everything runs its course, and we have to take different paths. We respect their decision and wish them only the best. We made heavy metal history together and that is all that matters at the end of the day. 'Chimaira Christmas 12' will be their last show, and we've been preparing to make it one that you'll never forget.

"I would personally like to thank Rob and Matt for all of their hard work, years of service to CHIMAIRA, amazing songs, and for their friendship. Together we built something special that will remain for generations to come.

"I'm looking forward to spending another five weeks on the road with two of the best (and criminally underrated) guitarists in modern metal.

"What's next for CHIMAIRA in 2012? More on that very soon.

"Rather than try and make light of unpleasant news, or downplay this by hyping up a new lineup, let's take a few to honor Rob and Matt. My favorite solo of Rob's is on 'The Heart Of It All' and my favorite riff of Matt's is 'The Dehumanizing Process'. I'll be cranking those today. What about you?"

New York City Rockers The Compulsions Unleash 'Beat The Devil' LP!

The Compulsions’ highly anticipated debut album, "Beat The Devil", is available today on iTunes with all other major online music outlets to follow.

The album's core lineup consists of founder and front man Rob Carlyle on lead vocal and guitar, Richard Fortus (Guns N' Roses) on guitar, Sami Yaffa (New York Dolls, Hanoi Rocks, Michael Monroe) on bass and Frank Ferrer (Guns N' Roses) on drums along with many of Carlyle's favorite local musicians; including long-revered blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin (Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters).

"Beat The Devil" promises to be a straight up Rock N' Roll record with unexpected musical moments throughout. In a recent interview with hard rock zine rocksalt.mx, Rob described the upcoming release as sounding like "Sticky Fingers or Some Girls but heavier and from modern day New York City."

In April 2011, The Compulsions performed to a capacity crowd at New York’s Hudson Hotel with new songs “Hired Gun” and “Eat My Dust” receiving great audience response among longtime set favorites "Groove On" and "Shake Hands With The Devil."

Rose Funeral To Join Full Blown Chaos, Battlecross and Diamond Plate For Fall US Tour!

Rose Funeral released "Gates of Punishment" on September 27th and has thus far been heralded as the band's best effort to date. Fans that have seen Rose Funeral live in the past know that the band puts on an intense show. This tour will be no different with guitarist Ryan Gardner now handling vocal duties. Rose Funeral will be joining the tour on November 15th in Spartanburg, SC.

Recently, Rose Funeral shot a video for Beyond the Entombed. The video is dark, blasphemous and will be premiering worldwide soon. Until then, here are some still photos from the shoot:

"Gates of Punishment" is a fitting progression of the band's dark and foreboding sound. Guest vocal appearances from local Cincinnati opera singer, Kate Alexander, and Steve Tucker of Morbid Angel add to the dark atmosphere that is created throughout the album. Seven string guitars tuned to drop A, haunting melodies, insane blasts and enough groove to keep heads banging will make this one of the heaviest releases of 2011.

"it is the best album the band has written to date" MetalUndeground.com

"intensely executed…surgical perfection" Power Play Magazine

Megadeth's Dave Ellefson Issues Tour Update From Th1rt3en World Tour - Video Available!

Megadeth unleashed their thirteenth studio album entitled "TH1RT3EN" on November 1st, 2011, via Roadrunner Records. Today (Wednesday, November 9th), Megadeth is kicking off their Th1rt3en World Tour in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Here is a video update recorded today by Megadeth's bassist Dave Ellefson.

CD track listing:

01. Sudden Death
02. Public Enemy No. 1
03. Whose Life (Is It Anyways?)
04. We The People
05. Guns, Drugs & Money
06. Never Dead
07. New World Order
08. Fast Lane
09. Black Swan
10. Wrecker
11. Millennium Of The Blind
12. Deadly Nightshade
13. 13

So far Megadeth's NEW studio album has sold 42,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 11 on The Billboard 200 chart.

"TH1RT3EN" first-week chart positions:

Australia: #13
Belgium: #83
Ireland: #43
Netherlands: #42
Norway: #32
UK: #34
USA: #11

Metal Hammer asked Megadeth's front-man Dave Mustaine: Your latest album, "TH1RT3EN", has just hit the shelves. What can fans expect from that album?

Mustaine: I think fans are going to be able to expect a very exciting record. With David Ellefson [bass] coming back, it brought back the classic sound, but also with the progress that we made with Shawn Drover [drums] and Chris Broderick [guitar]. I think that it's a very heavy, modern sound, and then adding Johnny K [producer] to that with his production skills, this is the optimum record that we could've made right now. So I think that the fans are going to be very happy with this record.

Additionally, the band recently premiered the music video for the first single out of Th1rt3en for the song "Public Enemy No. 1". The comical video was shot in California, a few days after Megadeth performed at the Big Four Concert at Yankee Stadium. Oh, and it features a very badass monkey! Watch it now!

Chickenfoot Bring Old School Roll N' Roll Back To New York City!

Last night (Tuesday, November 8th), the Rock N' Roll supergroup known as Chickenfoot performed at the legendary Webster Hall in New York City in front of a sold out crowd. In case you missed the memo, Chickenfoot features Van Halen's Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, guitar maestro Joe Satriani, and drummer Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Needless to say, this crew of old school musicians brought back the great vibes that only old school Rock N' Roll can deliver. Due to scheduling conflicts, Chad Smith was replaced by drumming legend Kenny Aronoff for Chickenfoot's current U.S./European Tour.

From the moment Joe Satriani stepped on stage and penetrated everyone's ear drums with his shredding guitar sound, Chickenfoot had the crowd on its toes. It is amazing what this man can do with a guitar, while keeping the song alive. As we all know, it is very hard to play loud and complex guitars parts while keep the musicality and dynamics intact. Throughout the entire set, you could see how dedicated Satriani is and how much of a perfectionist he is when it comes to guitar shredding. To say that he stole the show is an understatement... Joey (as he was baptized by a Pizza worker in New York City) is definitely a rock god!

But hey, lets not forget Sammy Hagar! His stage presence was undeniable last night and his energy captivated the audience from start to finish. Not only did his vocals sheer throughout the entire venue, but his famous rants in between songs were very entertaining. Seeing him side by side with his long time friend and bassist Michael Anthony is prove of their perseverance. The two of them together create a vibe that is hard to match and even though it may be cheesy at times, they definitely make the crowd feel good with their singalongs and stage antics!

To complete one of the best lineups in Rock music today, Chickenfoot counted with the presence of drummer Kenny Aronoff. While he is not Chad Smith (Chickenfoot's original drummer), Aronoff has skills that pay the bills. It was also very cool to see a drummer interact with the crowd and join Sammy Hagar with memorable stage rants.

All in all, it was a great performance that went on without any glitches. The show started on time, the sound was crisp, the drinks were poured, and the crowd was very well behaved. Most importantly, the band brought lots of joy to the rockers of New York, who ended up leaving with a nice buzz, a wide smile, and empty wallets! If you get a chance to catch Chickenfoot on their current mini-tour, please do so!
